SB851 - Relating to
WIRELESS Broadband Networks - OPPOSE
Under the guise of bringing broadband to unserved and underserved areas, this bill targets those areas and seeks to bypass local zoning review or approval for small cell wireless facilities. This is a very bad bill! Since most underserved areas are rural, and located on the neighbor islands, this bill would take away home rule. Each of the islands is different and local jurisdictions
are in the best position to determine what is best for their unique community. Local zoning should not be bypassed when it comes to small cells in public rights of way.
SB1390 - Establish a 3-year Broadband Infrastructure Task Force - OPPOSE
This bill seeks to fast-track implementation of artificial intelligence, driverless cars, and smart cities in Hawaii and develop cloud platforms "to turn Hawaii into a strategic communications and knowledge hub in the Pacific". One goal is to take advantage of federal funding targeting Hawaiian homelands, low income, and rural areas. This bill is tone deaf. People in need would benefit from food and affordable housing more than cloud
computing, augmented reality and robots.
SB947 - Establish & Fund Hawaii Broadband & Digital Equity Office - SUBMIT COMMENTS
This bill defines broadband as fixed and mobile, meaning, wired and wireless. We want everyone to have equal access to safer, faster, more secure fiber optics, which is part of broadband infrastructure. But we do not want more toxic towers and antennas spewing out harmful wireless radiation. We want the fiber optic cables to be run to the premises, to our homes, schools and businesses, not to the wireless towers and antennas. Fiber optics will
bring us faster, safer, more secure connectivity than wireless. Wireless is unnecessary, wasteful, harmful, not clean, not green, not sustainable. Online activity is faster, safer and more secure with fiber optics and hardwired ethernet. Omit the wireless!
