A 65' fake pine tree cell tower in Haiku, erected during lockdown, is illegal and needs to be removed.
The Verizon tower, built in early April on Kaupakalua Road near Herman's, was granted a County Special Use Permit in 2017 (CUP 2016/0006) according to public records obtained from the Maui Planning Department.
Records show the CUP expired on February 28, 2020. If an extension were to be sought, it was to be filed 90 days prior to the February expiration date, meaning, by November 30, 2019.
That extension was not filed by the deadline, nor has any request for an extension been filed at any time. It seems obvious this tower was built in violation of County code.
Join us in demanding enforcement.
We want this unpermitted tower to be removed immediately.
We do not consent to an "after the fact" permit or renewal!
Our county planning codes need to be honored. It's not OK for big corporations like Verizon to come in and run roughshod over our community.
We have also learned that Verizon has been contacted about this and has refused to reply!
Why would Maui County continue to permit Verizon towers in our county when they flagrantly violate our laws and overburden our county officials, forcing them into a policing role?
Many residents are opposed to this tower and the fact that it appears to be illegally constructed is of utmost concern.

Verizon's 65' fake pine tree cell tower is in violation. Please enforce the county code. It was built after the Special Use Permit expired, with no extension requested. It must be removed immediately. I do not consent to an after-the-fact renewal.
